Masks In Art Through HistoryMasking is a universal theme that has carried throughout the centuries. In Western art, masks, especially African masks, inspired the work of Pablo Picasso and Paul Gauguin. The main draw for these objects was the abstraction of the figure (the face) and the bright color palette. Cubism, Fauvism, Der Blaue Reiter, and Die Brücke were all stylistic movements which were influenced by "primitive masks." Picasso's "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon" is very indicative of the geometric faceting that is found in African masks. Also, there was an interest in the spirituality of the masks and it was believed that the "primitive" cultures that originated these masks were closely intertwined with nature. This is seen in the "Tahitian" series of paintings by Paul Gauguin. However, these objects are embedded in their own culture and were not art objects. Masks in their original context were used in religious rituals and rites of passage, as well as theatrical performa
